Woodgrain and Gradients

Improv Song, diptych, 48″ x 23.875″ x .5″, acrylic on plywood, completed February, 2016

© Steve Miller 2016

My new painting on plywood is a diptych which builds off of the woodgrain landscape series. The woodgrain still serves as compositional parameters. However, my intent is to work more graphically pushing the work further away from representation. Instead of using earth tones to describe a landscape, I am referring back to my bolder color palette; once again playing with bright gradients, which are counter directional. Sanding off layers of color and reapplying them creates depth in a new way for me. The natural wood tones become embroidered between broken color. The intent is to create a sense of rhythm and playfulness for the viewer. For me, working within self-imposed rules, trusting in an organic genesis, and sometimes ignoring traditional modes of representing forms in space, I hope to discover something new about painting.

Ofrenda Proposal

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Although our ofrenda wasn’t selected this year to be included in the DIA’s dia de los muertos exhibition, I still would like to share with you our concept.

Thank you Alex Goecke and Al Bodrie for being awesome collaborators and artists. If anyone is interested in funding this, we can build it.

Description of our concept

“Our ofrenda to the iconic musician and New Yorker, Lou Reed, will be a monumental altar in the form of the Empire State Building, celebrating his life and work as well as his profound influence on contemporary music.  Stylistically, the ofrenda will embrace a mash-up of 1960s pop art and Mexican folk art.  Neon lighting will illuminate the entire piece from within, including a subterranean “Velvet Underground,” backlit graphic images in the windows and a “Viva Lou” script above the building.”

Live Painting Demo

This past Friday,
I was one of a select number of artists nationwide hired by Blue Moon
(the beer owned by MillerCoors Inc.) to perform a live painting demonstration at a Sports Bar (Art and Jake’s in Shelby Township on 23 mile road) where patrons got to experience the thrill of watching yours truly recreate live a Blue Moon painting for their 20th anniversary celebration during which was a real blue moon event (the second full moon within the same month).

Thank you Joe Lafata, for choosing me as one of the select artists.
