A Great Divide is an abstract based on quadrants of gradients developed by dividing the canvas in half (a rule you’re not supposed to break) into a Christian cross and repeating the division down and to the right. This composition was conceived while considering the Golden Rectangle. Inspired by the golden ratio but not able to conform to it (60 x 40, a canvas size I use a lot because it fits in my car and looks good on your wall) I explored what repeating divisions I could create using this size rectangle. In turn, the finished piece seeks to lure the viewer into introspection over matters concerning choice, rules, spirituality, community, independence, place and environment. The color gradients serve as quadrants that facilitate thoughtful meditations as well as aesthetics.
