My new painting on plywood is a diptych which builds off of the woodgrain landscape series. The woodgrain still serves as compositional parameters. However, my intent is to work more graphically pushing the work further away from representation. Instead of using earth tones to describe a landscape, I am referring back to my bolder color palette; once again playing with bright gradients, which are counter directional. Sanding off layers of color and reapplying them creates depth in a new way for me. The natural wood tones become embroidered between broken color. The intent is to create a sense of rhythm and playfulness for the viewer. For me, working within self-imposed rules, trusting in an organic genesis, and sometimes ignoring traditional modes of representing forms in space, I hope to discover something new about painting.
Invented landscape paintings by Steve Miller based on the woodgrain of a piece of birch plywood.
