Black & White

@ the Grosse Pointe Artists Association

This exhibition challenges artists to look at a world without color. From subtle shades of grays to black, we are seeking work ranging from realism to surrealism and abstraction.

The Juror, Marat Paransky is a sculptor, painter, photographer and mixed-media artist. Born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1986, his family settled in Mero Detroit in 1997. He received an MFA degree in Visual Arts from the Lesley University College of Art & Design in Cambridge, MA, and undergraduate degrees in fine arts and political science. His art has been exhibited throughout Michigan, as well as in Boston, San Francisco, Fayetteville, AR, and Windsor, ON.
Marat’s work generally falls under the umbrellas of themed projects. One body of work focuses on the nuclear power/weapons industry. It combines his interest and research into the nuclear disasters, as well as its ties to his early childhood in Ukraine. Another project looks at chance and found objects/images. It takes the form of collage and assemblage, and there is often the inclusion of bits and pieces of Marat’s older artworks. Finally, there is the group of works that deals with recent political and artistic developments. The emphasis here is on text, language and symbols from everyday life, and it takes a more personal and self-reflexive approach.

Start Date: Mar 10, 2022

I painted this portrait of my friend John and gave it to him for Christmas.

Listen To See

After my fifth pandemic painting titled Ghost Golfers, I decided to work in a different medium. I’ve been writing and recording songs with my good friend Doug Shimmin under the band name the Covid Bros.

In late June, we released our first album, Essential Works with the guidance of Corey Roberts of Nub Records and digital distribution by CDBaby. You can find it wherever you stream or download your digital music, and we hope you do.

Songwriting, recording, and producing has really captivated my complete attention over this crazy spring and summer. There’s been so much to write about. I look forward to getting back in the studio to paint, however, we are finishing up our second release and hope to launch it this fall. After that, I will start painting again.

In the meantime, if you’re curious, check out our site, listen, share, and comment on Essential Works if you feel inspired.

During Covid-19

Like many artists during the pandemic, I am turning to creativity to get me through this isolation. I’m painting and writing and recording music.

I have had to cancel an upcoming exhibition, a trip to Oklahoma, as well as many plans, as I’m sure you have. However, I am looking forward to participating in online exhibitions like the one @AntonArtCenter is having and looking for new avenues to share my creative work.

Luckily, I have my wife and daughters to self quarantine with. I hope you have someone too. So in between home schooling and Face Timing family and friends look for new posts of paintings and music inspired by this strange time.

Plein Jane (paints the wrong thing)

My first painting of the new year.

En plein air is a French term that simply means painting out in the open. Plein Jane is a brand new character that I’ve created to help express my insecurities as an artist with humor.
